Desire Lines - Artists-in-Residence Program

A new city initiative for independent public artists

October 20-28, 2019

Five international artists who specialize in producing site-specific and ephemeral public artworks are invited to participate in an artist-in-residence program presented in collaboration with Oslo Kulturetaten.

Following the curatorial theme set by Oslo Architecture Triennale (which takes place from 26 Sep - 24 Nov) the residency program will explore ´degrowth´ from a street art perspective, in particular how human-scale, intervention-based street art practice can offer an alternative to large-scale, resource-heavy muralism.

The semi-structured residency program gives preference to more spontaneous and instantaneous means of interaction with the city and its inhabitants as opposed to prefabricated solutions. A series of temporary artworks that touch upon the paradigms of degrowth, sharing economy, rights to the city and intangible heritage will replace monolithic public art sculptures, and in the process point to new potentialities for the diversity of expression in our shared public spaces in Oslo.

The creation of the physical artworks will be supplemented by a program of artist presentations, panel debates, short film screenings and workshops on independent public art practice.
