Male Tears by Hello The Mushroom
Gamle Munchmuseet, Tøyengata 53, 0563 Oslo
5 - 8 Sep 2024
EN: Street Art Oslo is proud to present Male Tears, a solo exhibition by Hello The Mushroom.
Male Tears is a multi-disciplinary collaboration between the artist and ad-busting collective Subvertising Norway, consisting of a city-wide ad takeover and separate exhibition.
On 13 August 2024, 40 adverts promoting Hello The Mushroom's fictional ‘Male Tears’ perfume brand were installed in advertising spaces around Oslo. On the occasion of the exhibition at Gamle Munchmuseet, the perfume has now been brought to life.
Featuring original objects d´art, paintings and photography plus opening night performances by Oslo Street Art Festival’s in-house beauty technicians and ‘Insecurity Guards’, Male Tears is an ambitious, albeit tongue-in-cheek, commentary on rigid gender roles.
As well as the original artworks on display, Street Art Oslo has also produced a zine documenting the project with images by photographer Nima Taheri and commissioned text by Eleanor Flowers.
“As we all know boys don’t cry, making male tears an extremely precious and valuable commodity. In our society men are expected to behave differently from women, as if our biology is completely alien to each other. If there’s one thing I hope people take away from this exhibition, it’s that treating men as incapable of human emotion does a disservice to all mankind.” - Hello The Mushroom
Sara Lucas aka Hello The Mushroom is an artist from Lisbon, now living in Oslo. Sara is interested in the idea of transforming existing materials using objects that would otherwise be thrown away or considered superfluous. Their artworks are therefore mainly image-based, made from reused print media, and are characterized by the artist's exploration of topics such as life, death and cultural expectations of women, often in a humorous way.
Subvertising Norway (est. 2018) is a not-for-profit collective of artists, activists and designers dedicated to questioning who has the power and authority to communicate and create meaning in public space through acts of creative subversion and art-based activism.
