EN: Street Art Oslo is proud to present Danse Macabre, the first exhibition in Oslo by Bergen-based artist Dish.
The Danse Macabre, also called the Dance of Death, is an artistic genre of allegory of the Late Middle Ages on the universality of death. The Danse Macabre consists of the dead, or a personification of death, summoning representatives from all walks of life to dance along to the grave.
Best known for her illustrated porcelain and ceramic plates featuring skulls, birds and 'yonic imagery' (from yoni, Sanskrit, for vulva, fertility), Dish’s interpretation of The Danse Macabre is clearly rooted in pre-Christian mythology.
Presented alongside two prominent figures in the exhibition, Ronja Røverdatter and Mari Boine - the former a young, rebellious female character from Scandinavian children’s literature and the latter the Sami singer, musician and performer who resisted the Norwegian government’s assimilation policy to suppress joik (Sami's traditional folk music) - Danse Macabre by Dish forms a compelling feminist reflection on themes of emancipation, power and humanity’s enduring preoccupation with life and death.
Dish is a multidisciplinary artist from London, currently living and working in Bergen.
